Acclimation Guide

1. Prepare Your Aquarium

Make sure your aquarium is fully cycled, with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, and the temperature is suitable for your new fish.

2. Start Drip Acclimation

Place your fish and their transport water into a clean container. Using airline tubing, slowly drip water from your aquarium into the container at approximately 2–4 drops per second.

3. Slowly Add Aquarium Water

Over the next 30–60 minutes, allow the water volume to approximately double. This helps your fish gradually adjust to their new water conditions.

4. Transfer Your Fish

Gently net your fish into their new aquarium. Avoid adding transport water to your tank.

5. Give Them Time to Settle

Keep the aquarium lights off for a few hours and wait until the following day before feeding.

Important: Arrived with an issue?

If any fish arrive dead (DOA), keep the transport bag sealed and contact us within 24 hours with clear photos of the fish inside the unopened bag.

See our DOA Policy for more information.

The Twig Catfish Farlowella is a slender freshwater catfish with an elongated, twig-like body in shades of brown, tan, or olive, often accented by subtle mottled markings. Its long, narrow snout, flattened underside, armored body plates, and delicate fins give it a distinctive branch-like appearance.

Common names: Twig Catfish, Farlowella Catfish, Whiptail Catfish, Stick Catfish
Scientific name: Farlowella sp. (the exact species may vary in aquarium trade)
Approximate size: 15–20 cm, depending on species
Temperament: Peaceful, shy, and slow-moving; best kept with small, peaceful tankmates
Recommended tank size: 100 L or larger for a small group
Diet: Primarily algae, biofilm, and fine plant matter; supplement with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables
Origin: South America, including the Amazon and Orinoco river systems
Basic care information: Farlowella catfish have extremely slender bodies that resemble twigs, helping them blend into their surroundings. Provide a mature aquarium with driftwood, smooth surfaces, broad-leaved plants, and plenty of natural algae and biofilm for grazing. Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water around 23–26°C with a pH of approximately 6.0–7.5. They are sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes, so perform regular, moderate water changes and avoid aggressive tankmates or strong competition for food. A secure lid is recommended.
