Common names: Turquoise Rainbowfish, Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish, Blue Rainbowfish
Scientific name: Melanotaenia lacustris
Approximate size: 8–10 cm
Temperament: Peaceful and active; best kept in groups of 6 or more
Recommended tank size: 120 L or larger
Diet: Omnivorous; accepts quality flakes, pellets, algae-based foods, and frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms
Origin: Lake Kutubu and the Soro River, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea
Basic care information: Keep in a group with plenty of open swimming space, plants or cover around the edges, and clean, well-oxygenated water. Maintain stable conditions around 20–26°C with neutral to slightly alkaline water, around pH 7.0–8.0. Mature males develop vivid turquoise to blue-green coloration and a deeper body, while females are generally smaller and more silvery. A varied diet helps maintain coloration. A secure lid is recommended as they can jump.
