Acclimation Guide

1. Prepare Your Aquarium

Make sure your aquarium is fully cycled, with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, and the temperature is suitable for your new fish.

2. Start Drip Acclimation

Place your fish and their transport water into a clean container. Using airline tubing, slowly drip water from your aquarium into the container at approximately 2–4 drops per second.

3. Slowly Add Aquarium Water

Over the next 30–60 minutes, allow the water volume to approximately double. This helps your fish gradually adjust to their new water conditions.

4. Transfer Your Fish

Gently net your fish into their new aquarium. Avoid adding transport water to your tank.

5. Give Them Time to Settle

Keep the aquarium lights off for a few hours and wait until the following day before feeding.

Important: Arrived with an issue?

If any fish arrive dead (DOA), keep the transport bag sealed and contact us within 24 hours with clear photos of the fish inside the unopened bag.

See our DOA Policy for more information.

The Freshwater Tiger Moray Eel is a distinctive eel with an elongated, serpentine body decorated with bold dark brown or black bands against a lighter yellowish-brown or cream background. Its smooth, scaleless appearance, pointed snout, small eyes, and continuous dorsal fin create a striking tiger-like pattern and a sleek, snake-like silhouette.

Common Names: Freshwater Tiger Moray Eel, Tiger Moray Eel
Scientific Name: Gymnothorax polyuranodon
Approximate Size: Can reach around 90–150 cm (35–59 inches) in captivity or in the wild, depending on conditions.
Temperament: Predatory and territorial; may eat smaller fish and other tankmates that fit in its mouth.
Recommended Tank Size: A very large, secure aquarium of several hundred litres is required for juveniles, with a much larger system needed as it grows.
Diet: Carnivorous; offer suitable meaty foods such as fish, shrimp, and other marine or freshwater-origin seafood appropriate to its needs.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region, including freshwater and brackish habitats in parts of Southeast Asia and Oceania.
Basic Care Information: Despite its common name, this species is not reliably suited to permanent freshwater conditions. It is associated with freshwater and brackish environments, and salinity requirements can vary with life stage and locality. Provide excellent filtration, stable water quality, plenty of hiding places, and a tightly secured lid, as moray eels can escape through small gaps. Research its specific salinity needs before purchase and avoid keeping it with small fish or invertebrates.
