Desert Rainbowfish are a stunning Australian native subspecies of the Eastern Rainbowfish, found in the arid inland waterways of Central Australia. Males develop vivid colouration with iridescent scales that intensify with age and good conditioning.

Scientific name: Melanotaenia splendida tatei
Approximate size: 8–10 cm
Temperament: Peaceful and active; best kept in groups of 6 or more
Recommended tank size: 120 L or larger
Diet: Omnivorous; accepts quality flakes, pellets, algae-based foods, and small frozen/live foods
Origin: Central Australia, particularly the Lake Eyre Basin, including parts of Queensland, South Australia, and the Northern Territory
Basic care information: Keep in a group with plenty of open swimming space, plants, and good water quality. Provide clean, well-oxygenated water and regular maintenance. Desert Rainbowfish are adaptable and naturally occur in rivers, waterholes, lakes, and other slow-moving or still freshwater habitats. Males can develop purple or blue-green coloration, while females are generally more silvery.
