Acclimation Guide

1. Prepare Your Aquarium

Make sure your aquarium is fully cycled, with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, and the temperature is suitable for your new fish.

2. Start Drip Acclimation

Place your fish and their transport water into a clean container. Using airline tubing, slowly drip water from your aquarium into the container at approximately 2–4 drops per second.

3. Slowly Add Aquarium Water

Over the next 30–60 minutes, allow the water volume to approximately double. This helps your fish gradually adjust to their new water conditions.

4. Transfer Your Fish

Gently net your fish into their new aquarium. Avoid adding transport water to your tank.

5. Give Them Time to Settle

Keep the aquarium lights off for a few hours and wait until the following day before feeding.

Raccoon Tetras (Hyphessobrycon procyon) are attractive South American schooling fish known for their shimmering silver body, distinctive dark facial markings, and active nature. Peaceful and eye-catching, they make an excellent addition to well-planted community aquariums.

Scientific name: Hyphessobrycon procyon
Approximate size: Up to 2.5 cm (1 in)
Temperament: Peaceful, active schooling fish
Recommended tank size: 40–60 L (10–15 US gal) or larger
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for small invertebrate foods; micro-pellets and finely crushed flakes, supplemented with baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small frozen or live foods
Origin: South America — Brazil, in the upper Rio Juruena/Rio Tapajós basin
Basic care information: Keep in groups of 6 or more, with larger groups preferred. Provide a planted aquarium with gentle filtration, open swimming areas, and areas of cover. Maintain clean, stable water around 23–28°C (73–82°F). Because of their very small adult size, keep them with similarly small, peaceful tankmates and avoid larger fish that may view them as prey.
