Waterhouse Snails (Notopala waterhousei) are attractive Australian freshwater snails known for their rounded, spiral shells and peaceful nature.
Common names: Waterhouse Snail, Waterhouse's River Snail, Australian Freshwater Snail
Scientific name: Notopala waterhousei
Approximate size: Up to 4–5 cm (1.6–2 in)
Temperament: Peaceful freshwater snail
Recommended tank size: 30 L (8 US gal) or larger
Diet: Omnivorous grazer; primarily algae, biofilm, periphyton, and detritus. Can be supplemented with algae wafers and other suitable sinking foods.
Origin: Australia, particularly central Northern Territory and western Queensland
Basic care information: Keep in clean, well-oxygenated freshwater around 20–28°C (68–82°F). Slightly hard, calcium-rich water is beneficial for healthy shell growth. Waterhouse Snails are generally plant-safe and graze on algae and organic material rather than healthy living plants. They are live-bearing, with females producing fully formed young rather than laying typical egg clutches. Avoid copper-based medications and very soft or acidic water.
