Ramshorn Snails are peaceful, hardy snails ideal for planted community aquariums. Known for their distinctive flat, coiled shell resembling a ram's horn, they are effective algae grazers and detritus feeders that help maintain clean glass and substrate.
Common names: Ramshorn Snail, Ramshorn
Scientific name: Planorbella spp. / Planorbis spp.
Approximate size: 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in)
Temperament: Peaceful freshwater snail
Recommended tank size: 10 L (2.5 US gal) or larger
Diet: Omnivorous; algae, biofilm, decaying plant matter, leftover food, and algae wafers or vegetables.
Origin: North and South America, Europe, and parts of Asia, depending on species
Basic care information: Keep in clean, stable freshwater around 20–28°C (68–82°F). Provide algae, biofilm, and supplemental foods as needed, along with adequate calcium for healthy shell growth. Ramshorn snails are peaceful scavengers that help consume algae and organic debris. They reproduce readily, especially when food is abundant, so populations should be monitored. Avoid copper-based medications and very soft or acidic water.
