Black Devil Snails (Faunus ater) are striking freshwater snails with long, spiral black shells that add a unique touch to planted and community aquariums.
Common names: Black Devil Snail, Black Devil Spike Snail
Scientific name: Faunus ater
Approximate size: Up to 7–8 cm (2.8–3.1 in)
Temperament: Peaceful freshwater and brackish-water snail
Recommended tank size: 30 L (8 US gal) or larger
Diet: Omnivorous grazer; algae, biofilm, detritus, and decaying organic matter. Can be supplemented with algae wafers and other sinking foods.
Origin: Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region
Basic care information: Keep in clean, well-oxygenated water around 22–28°C (72–82°F). Provide adequate calcium and stable water conditions for healthy shell growth. Faunus ater is generally peaceful and suitable for community aquariums. It can tolerate freshwater but naturally occurs in habitats influenced by brackish water. It does not normally reproduce successfully in typical freshwater aquariums because its larvae require brackish or marine conditions. Avoid copper-based medications and very soft or acidic water.
