The Salmon Red Rainbowfish is a slender freshwater fish with a silvery body that develops vibrant salmon-red to orange coloration along the sides and back. Its iridescent scales and translucent fins enhance its bright, warm-toned appearance.
Common names: Salmon Red Rainbowfish, Red Rainbowfish, Lake Sentani Rainbowfish, Irian Jaya Rainbowfish
Scientific name: Glossolepis incisa
Approximate size: 10–15 cm
Temperament: Peaceful and active; best kept in groups of 6 or more
Recommended tank size: 150–200 L or larger
Diet: Omnivorous; accepts quality flakes, pellets, algae-based foods, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia
Origin: Lake Sentani and associated waters, Papua, Indonesia
Basic care information: Keep in a group with plenty of open swimming space, plants or cover around the sides, and excellent filtration. Provide warm, clean, well-oxygenated water, preferably around 24–30°C with neutral to alkaline conditions. Mature males develop a deep salmon-red to copper-red coloration and a pronounced arched back, while females and subordinate males are generally silvery, olive, or yellow-brown. A secure lid is recommended as they can jump. The species is restricted to Lake Sentani in the wild and is considered threatened, so captive-bred specimens are preferable.
