Acclimation Guide

1. Prepare Your Aquarium

Make sure your aquarium is fully cycled, with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, and the temperature is suitable for your new fish.

2. Start Drip Acclimation

Place your fish and their transport water into a clean container. Using airline tubing, slowly drip water from your aquarium into the container at approximately 2–4 drops per second.

3. Slowly Add Aquarium Water

Over the next 30–60 minutes, allow the water volume to approximately double. This helps your fish gradually adjust to their new water conditions.

4. Transfer Your Fish

Gently net your fish into their new aquarium. Avoid adding transport water to your tank.

5. Give Them Time to Settle

Keep the aquarium lights off for a few hours and wait until the following day before feeding.

Important: Arrived with an issue?

If any fish arrive dead (DOA), keep the transport bag sealed and contact us within 24 hours with clear photos of the fish inside the unopened bag.

See our DOA Policy for more information.

Black Ghost Knifefish are distinctive freshwater fish with long, smooth, jet-black bodies accented by a narrow white band near the tail and a white marking on the head. Their elongated, blade-like shape, lack of a prominent dorsal fin, and long undulating lower fin give them a sleek and unusual appearance.

Common names: Black Ghost Knifefish, Black Ghost Knife, Black Knife Fish
Scientific name: Apteronotus albifrons
Approximate size: 40–50 cm
Temperament: Generally peaceful with suitably sized tankmates but territorial toward its own kind; predatory toward small fish and shrimp
Recommended tank size: 600 L or larger for one adult, ideally with a tank footprint of approximately 180 × 60 cm
Diet: Carnivorous; sinking carnivore pellets, bloodworms, earthworms, shrimp, insect larvae, and other meaty foods
Origin: Tropical South America, including the Amazon and Orinoco river basins
Basic care information: This distinctive, nocturnal fish has a long black body, white markings near the tail, and an undulating anal fin that allows it to swim forwards and backwards. Provide dim lighting, a soft sand substrate, caves or wide tubes for daytime shelter, and clean, well-oxygenated water around 23–28°C with a pH of approximately 6.0–8.0. It produces and senses weak electrical signals to navigate and locate food. Because it has scaleless skin, it is sensitive to poor water quality and some medications, so use treatments cautiously. Tankmates must be peaceful and too large to swallow. A tightly fitted lid is essential.
