Tancho ‘Red Head’ Comets are slender goldfish with bright white to silvery bodies contrasted by vivid red patches on the tops of their heads. Their elongated fins, long flowing single tails, and clean red-and-white coloration give them a graceful and distinctive appearance.
Common names: Tancho Comet, Red Head Comet, Red Cap Comet
Scientific name: Carassius auratus
Approximate size: 20–30 cm; can grow larger with excellent care
Temperament: Peaceful and active; social and best kept with other similarly sized, active goldfish
Recommended tank size: 150 L+ for one adult; larger tanks or ponds are recommended for multiple fish
Diet: Omnivorous; quality goldfish pellets or flakes, vegetables, and suitable frozen or live foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp
Origin: Japan; developed through selective breeding of goldfish
Basic care information: A Comet goldfish with a predominantly white or silvery-white body and a concentrated red marking on the head, giving it a distinctive Tancho or “red head” appearance. It retains the long, flowing tail and streamlined body characteristic of Comet goldfish. Provide ample swimming space, strong biological filtration, good oxygenation, and regular water changes. Maintain clean, stable water around 18–24°C with a pH of approximately 6.5–8.0. Keep with other active, single-tailed goldfish and avoid slow-moving fancy varieties that may be outcompeted for food.
